Aquaponics
Aquaponics is a sustainable system which utilizes fish in tanks as means to provide nutrients to plants in a garden. The fish waste is used to feed the plants, and the plants filter the water which keeps the fish alive and healthy. The types of fish an aquaponic system can use include perch, tilapia, koi, oscars, and catfish. An aquaponic system significantly cuts back the water consumption of a garden and can be built in places which have little or no soil. However, they cannot support the growth of fruits, but can be used to grow various types of vegetables.
The Aquaponics Team is in charge of choosing a design and creating an aquaponic system for our self-sustainable garden. We’ve looked at prices of materials and different designs that would best suit our space, budget, and material requirements. We also collaborate with other groups working on different aspects of the garden in order to make sure everything works in an orderly and sustainable fashion. We plan on using a 55 gallon aquaponic system and have chosen tilapia as the fish we will put in our system.
